5 Things you can do in and around Phaltan
Phaltan. Does this name sounds familiar.? It will not for most of the people, but this is my hometown, where I born. Phaltan is located in Satara district of Maharashtra state, 110 km from Pune and 275 from Mumbai. It is just driving distance away and might be a good place for weekend trips. There is some places you can go for. Lets check this out.
1. Rajwada Palace
Have you watched Bollywood movies, such as the Akshay Kumar starrer Khatta Meetha, and Zila Ghaziabad? If you have, then you would instantly recognise the magnificent Rajwada Palace in Phaltan, once a Maratha princely state of British India. The enormity of the palace hits you when you walk from one room to another. The living rooms, dining rooms, lounge rooms, and more,, each done up and decorated with fantastic gold frame portraits, furniture with intricate wood-work, silver sofas, velvet upholsteries, grand chandeliers and so on. One particular room is extraordinarily all red, everything from the chandeliers, to the curtains, and even the paintings are red in colour. One of the many dining rooms has a long table that can seat 50 people. The descendents don't stay here anymore, but they have opened the gates of this opulent palace for tourists. I ventured into a few rooms that are not open to public, and having opened the heavy doors, I found myself in a cold and dark room, which was downright spooky.
2. Wine by windmill
There is an hotel which drives us to an area known for windmills. It takes almost an hour across a dry and rocky mountain region, crossing several villages. We can see windmills from the distance as car moves closer.
This is the closet place to windmill as for once you could feel like "What if its big gigantic blade falls on your head ?" and truly this is the frequently asked question. You can enjoy the sun set across horizon. This is alone is enough to make your trip to Phaltan.
3. Ajinkyatara Fort
A very scenic Fort, located at the Sahayadri Mountains, it is about 66 km from Phaltan city. Ajinkyatara means 'the impregnable star,' and is a fort from the 16th century. It is on one of the seven mountains surrounding Satara, the district where Phaltan is situated in. Perched up on a 3,300 feet high mountain, the fort offers magnificent view of the entire Satara city. The fort is a major historic place of Maharashtra. The other fort you can go to is Varugad fort, some 27 km from the hotel. The hill fort, at a height of 2,900 ft, has the Bhairavnath temple as one of the attractions.
4. Dhumalwadi Waterfall
Now this is just perfect for a day-long picnic, located at 27 km from Phaltan. The scenery immediately changes from barren villageto nature’s bounty. The best time to visit is the monsoon season which starts now. Visitors have to do a short clim in order to get to the vantage point, and it is from here that you will be able to see the magnificent fall. There is a lot more to explore and experience around here, an ideal spot for those looking to walk and hike amidst nature.
